My legs feel like they’re gonna fall off! Took out 3/4 mile of electric fence this afternoon, the fence that held the cows last fall down in the meadows, swamps, fields and brush. Saved me mucho hay bales doing that and I figured it was a good time to take it down today before the manure hits the fan around this place. So as of now everything on that 80 acres is good! The field roads are drying up nicely, the cow lot where they get fed silage is even drying up which really surprised me! The fields would still swallow a tractor but they’re setting up more and more every day. I drove one of our tractors to the county seat today, about a twenty five mile trip, and even over near the Mississippi River they’re not doing field work yet. Those are sand flats that dry up quick. Mostly big farmers and corporate farmers over that way. A big crop there is potatoes and from spring to fall the areal spraying seldom stops. Glad we don’t live over that way, could be more than hazardous to a feller’s health.
Today though, working rolling up electric wire and pulling small electric fence posts out of very moist ground was a treat indeed! Almost no noise in the territory today, very little wind and nobody in the fields yet made for a day when a person could just get out and enjoy the open spaces. Allot of thoughts go through a person’s head, farming and faith, faith and farming. And of course don’t forget family which is in both farming and faith anyhow. Don’t want it to look like I’m belittling that! Never! On the farming and ranching end of things, well, its no secret that these last few years have been tough with the multiple, back to back to back droughts. Long before there was worries about the economy on the media and in this nation as a whole there were tough times here, sometimes very tough. And those thoughts out in the meadows while taking down fence as far as the farming and ranching end of things are concerned were about continuing the dream of years ago before they were almost entireloy stomped out by these last few years. To have a second to none cowherd, the type of herd a person could be proud of. reputation cattle! The fact is they are pretty high up there as far as reputation cattle go in these here parts. And most folks in the area haven’t the slightest clue how that herd took a hit over the last few years. Two years in a row I didn’t even keep replacement heifers, not enough feed to carry them through a winter. The cowherd has gotten a little over the hill as far as age is concerned. There wasn’t much a person could do except hold on tight and pray that things would turn around sooner or later.
This year I held back a nice batch of replacement heifers, both Black Angus and Black Baldies. Good stuff. Get some young blood back in the herd! There’s gonna be a network of new corrals built this summer in the spare time when I’m not making hay or something. These are buit with railroad ties and oak plank, heavy duty. There’s going to be renewed effort in getting the place and the herd top notch! Almost had er once, but got beat back a bit, now there’s a new fever in me to continue this and see it through. I write this cause sometimes people might wonder about someone who has faith in God and a calling to boot in the ministry, wondering if they let the cattle operation and the farm slide and just fool around with church stuff. Maybe some do that, I don’t know, but this cattle business is in my blood just as this faith is. And a person has to make a living, might as well do it good! There ain’t know way I could ever do church stuff, faith stuff, when I’d be knowing that I ain’t doing the job right on the farm.
I was going to write more on this but am behind a bit on other stuff so with any luck I’ll be able to finish it off sometime. There’s Kingdom work to do and cattle herd work to take care of. Spread the Gospel the best a feller can, and take care of the herd and make a reputation herd that a person can be more than satisfied with!
Good Morning,
Well, it sounds like everything is going pretty well there. That ol electric fence work made me smile. I might be a rare one, but I almost like fence work. Your right, it is quiet, sometimes, I can even look over and see them cows!! Something I don’t do a whole lot of in the spring, summer, and fall!!
. I enjoy the quiet then, No tractor noise, no sortin or yelling or dodging, Just me, the wind, my thoughts and 200000000 spikes ready to eat me up (I do mostly barb wire ya know….).
Now your cow herd sounds a lot better than my ol mongrel breed. I’m still building though… I believe its about time for a second bull, but we’ll see how this summer pans out. This ol drought took its toll too. I couldn’t build as much as I wanted too. Ended up bein a good thing though with all that happened. I guess ol God takes care us even when we think we don’t need it!!
Ahh well, I”m about to put the bible down for a couple of weeks. I got ahead on that ol Chronological one, so I wouldn’t have to take it overseas with me. I’m in ol Samuel now… I’ll tell you, as boring as the law books were, Samuel makes up for it!!
Wars, pillaging, coups….. Its better than most novels I’ve read
Well, better get at it. Today is my last day at work before the trip. I’ve got to try to get the farm in order before I go. Two weeks is a long time to be away. I’ve been feedin extra, so grass would get up in the next pasture…. I think I’m ready for this big ol adventure…..
Have a GREAT day,
Brad
Morning Brad!
Well, it’ll be quiet around here when your gone, that’ll be a hole in the day, I always look forward to this almost every morning! But there’ll be a few prayers heading your way over the big water when your over there!
Today I figure on pulling equipment out of the machine shed for spring work. Not going in any field or anything like that, just getting ready is all. Will have a bit of help today and had better use it.
Kinda wished I was fencing today too! Sure did enjoy that yesterday! Talk about peaceful! And I do know barb wire fencing! And net wire too for that matter. This electric fencing is just a walk in the park compared to that! You gotta see the invention we got here for cleaning electric fences! A pull behind jobby, pull it behind the four wheeler. Chop thistles, brush, grass, you name it. A mean machine and it’ll save this old fellers back!
I figure your reading the same order as my wife, she’s reading the Bible in the order you are. I’m still in the Book of Judges and in the New I’m in Mark. Already read Matthew and Acts in the New.
And as the weather straightens out here I’m finally figuring out what to do with the blogs. As you know I’ve been wondering for a long time on what to do, which blog to let go of and all of that sort of thing. Even though this one doesn’t get all too much readership, I’ll keep it because of the relaxed atmosphere and the friendships here. I do believe I’ll finally retire Northern Farmer in a little while, having been four years, I think it ran its course. And it makes me tired. There’ll be a new one too. Called “Christian Farm and Ranchman”. Set er up last evening, didn’t write anything yet, but at least it exists. A feller gotta do what he enjoys, the other way was becoming a burden. So there’ll be some changes, some taking the old to the dump and setting up new and fresh things. But like I say, this one will keep going because I enjoy it.
There, I’d better gulp down my food and coffee and head outside, ahh, sure is nice to see the earth again instead of a world of white
God Bless!
Hey Tom….
Sorry, I have been all busy getting ready for the big trip. Been going 100 miles an hour ya know……
I’m off to try to fore up a tempremental 30 year old MF12 riding lawnmower now… Its the only one in my mowing Aresenal that seems to have even a hint of running… ahhh well….
Anyway, have a good couple of weeks. I’ll think about y’all a bunch.
Have a GREAT couple of weeks!!
Brad
Morning Brad!
Hmm, for some reason I came in for another cup of coffee this morning after doing some chores and here you show up
Well, when your over there see if there’s any internet around and you can hook up here! It sure ain’t impossible you know!
Have a safe and blessed trip, you’ll be in our thoughts and prayers, that’s for sure! By the way, she’s drying up around these parts, field work is very near, very near!

God Bless!
don’t no about firmly planted, it’ mighty windy here!
hope he is having a good time
Hey Jan!
It’s really windy here too! Man, what a blaster today! Was getting hit with ice pellets this afternoon when I was checking the new born calves out there in the field. Thursday is supposed to be in the eighties here, so that will be different to the folks on the tundra
I’m looking forward to it!
God Bless!
