Morning!

I'll be around Josh, working on the farm but no field work that I can see. Just swing on by and I should be around somewhere!

Brad, it ain't as hot as down your way here, but it wears me out just the same. Got done swathing yesterday, ah, the power of prayer because when you swath with our neighbor's swather that's thee only thing keeping it going :) One rule on that thing, never look closely at the machine or you'll be fixing all day. Just look straight ahead with determination, never lower your eyes to the machine......and pray, allot :) Now its the neighbor's turn to swath his....rule number two, never watch the neighbor swath or you'll be at the neighbor's farm all day repairing the swather. Rule number three, if the neighbor is swathing that day and you see him driving up your driveway with his pickup....hide, fast!

My condolences to your rototiller. Must been close to it, eh!

Well, gotta get a bunch of stuff out of the way today so I'm ready for combining Monday, take care down there!

God Bless!

Morning,

Well looks like another hot and muggy one out there today. I've got a million things to do and about 4 hours to do em. ahhhh well, such is summer in Alabama.

Well, looks like the rototiller finally gave up the ghost. 40 years it did pretty good, finally this tough ol Alabama red clay exacted its toll. The gear that drives the blade is as smooth as can be over about 1/2 of it. The good news, is the motor is still good, so I can replace that ol hay elevator motor thats giving me fits.

Well, better git on. Its bill payin time this morning, that ought put me in a good mood for the rest of the day.....

Have a GREAT day,

Morning Brad!
Well, with a little luck I can finish the oats swathing today, (plus bale some more hay), and get ready for combining next week. I sure would be one happy guy if that gets all wrapped up by the end of next week!

That picker is one of them newer ones, a super picker, and I've run that model for years, borrowed from the neighbor, and I just love it! A pull behind, easy to hitch up and go. Them things can really pick corn, they get down to business. I forget the model number, never was much good at that. Makes me kinda a poor farmer, never remembering model numbers and such, but I get by.

The garden is starting to make more and more of an appearance in our house. This is that good time of year that a person could never equal with the store bought veggies. And when this here small grains is done with I want to pickle up some string beans! Ain't hardly nothing better on this earth! I love it in the dead of winter when I come in from a few hours of morning chores and open the fridge and get out three or four pickled string beans and sit my butt in front of the computer to tend the blogs, just munching away at them beans, GLORY, that can get me going just thinking about such things! (Notice, I'm pretty easy to excite :) )
So now I'll see what can be accomplished the next two days and look forward to Sunday service at church to wrap it all up, or should I say to start the new week!

Morning Tom,

Well, we've been getting pretty lucky on these pop up showers lately. They've been hitting home pretty regular. The ol hand dug well is flowing again and I can stop having to bring out water to the farm. I'll tell you, days and days of mid 90's heat will cause you to miss that ol cold well water. By 10 am the jug waters about as warm as the air.

Gardens still going strong. My wife made some "Aunt Bea" pickles the other day. I love bread and butter pickles, but something went terribly wrong here. I feel like ol Barney and Andy trying to eat these things. Only 11 more jars to go........ I'm just glad she didn't enter them in the county fair :). She also made some refridgerator pickles that are out of this world.

Every night we've got that ol pressure cooker going now (Well, she's got it going..... I just offer that helpful manly advice.... even if she don't need it.... :) ). The pantry is filling up and my wifes complaining about running out of jars. Life is good here.

That ol picker you got's peaked my interest. Is it a pull behind or mounted? I dunno how you made it to church with that thing just arriving.... I'm like a kid in the candy store anytime some ol raggely piece of equipment rolls onto the farm. Them ol pickers have enough chains and rollers and gears to make them not that ol penny candy either. Did you end up with one of them 300 series or do you have an older one. I hear them newer ones the husking rollers are easier to changeout. Mine had me speaking in tongues......(Cattlemans tongues that is.....)

Well, fixing to start another weekend of fix it stuff. Our raggely ol rototiller bit the dust again and the possibilities of his and her hoes has got me scramblin to fix it. There's a tractor show this weekend too I might head to. I always like to look at tractors that are just like mine....... except running........ :) . Maybe I'll pick up a tip on getting the sputtering out of that ol 1010.

Anyway I hope your weekend is good.

Have a GREAT day,

Morning Fellers!
Just call the mustache thing a service for the Lord :) What can I say! The kids got a down right thrill out of the revenge they got on old Tom though! And Brent, your just a youngster, well at least by seven months to me, and I'm wishing you a happy and blessed belated birthday this morning! And like Brad said, better days are coming! And I believe that!

I'm glad you enjoyed the Sheffey book Brad! We sure do gotta thank Jan for that! Speaking of Jan, is she missing in action?? She's not been around the web layely and I, and I'm sure others, sure do miss her!

Yup, paper work and old Tom don't mix very well. Just as soon do it like old Sheffey did. And he sure didn't think all that greatly of the "higher ups" at the time. I like the front line work, I'm not a behind the battle paper chaser. We'll see how it all develops. Knowing me it might take a few years just to fill out some papers. Most of the time papers get filled out because if they ain't I'd go to jail. And even then they're almost always late :)

Well, I was gonna swath some oats, probably still will later, but looks like rain arriving here shortly. Have to see how that plays out. Had our best rains this year when they said there was very little chance. Same as today.

Brent, all I can say is let me recover and I'll see what I can do about getting you a CD someday of the service. Rumor has it that they're a hot item, but I don't know. Can't see how, must be speculation value, folks figure they might be worth something someday :)

Well, I gotta get myself going, tis the season you know!

God Bless!

Morning Guys,

Hmmm.... wonder what ol Sheffey would say about signing all them papers. After you get em filled out alls you'll need is the sheep wool and the coat and tails. You'll be ready to go.

You know, down here that first year, I had the same problem with the reids yellow dent. All that lodging can sure depress a fellow. I ended up going through and using the corn knife to feed some really happy (and fenced in at the time...) goats. These new (old) op types I'm trying this year have a shorter stalk. We'll see how they do. Gotta get that ol corn a cookin next year, and hope some coat and tie wearin, passport photo carryin, preacher don't come through and mistake my fuel source for corn likker :) .

Ohhh hoe!!!! A new toy!! I'll tell you, I've got an ol No. 10 one row. If you need any pattern dimensions for the ol wood or part numbers and all, I've got the book or the pieces I can measure on that ol thing. I can even almost time the thing too. Of course I notice you "industrialized" farmers have to go out and get them new fangled high capacity machines...... I mean.... dou you really need a two row??? :) .

Tom, that Sheffey book has made it off the nightstand and should be coming back your way pretty soon. Like I said before, don't worry about sending the CP book back. Keep it, or send it on to someone else. I'll tell you, your 2 for 2 on book recomendations. Or your 1 for 1 and Jan is too.....

Well better git on. You know, your resume might make you more qualified than you think. I know a bunch of guys that shovel manure that have never been on the farm............

Hang in there Brent..... better days are comin'

Have a GREAT day,

Hey Tom, nice moustache, great colors! That's what you get for gambling though! Glad your corn is doing well, ours is a wreck, the cold and wet brought an unbeatable crop of mustard in the corn, will wait and decide if anything will be salvagable. The continuing rain here means we have the cleanest hay I can remember, haven't baled a bit that hasn't been rained on after we cut! Todays my birthday (52) got to celebrate by signing the papers that sends 2/3 of the herd to auction next week, FSA said if we didn't they would start foreclosure. 120 years we been here, so we will try to hang on for a while yet. Careful with that old cornpicker, lots of guys have lost a hand in them dang things, I ALWAYS shut off the PTO before I get off the tractor and get anywhere near mine! Hope you had a nice night at church, you are a blessed man.

PS How about that tape of your sermon?

Morning Brad!
Things are going around here. A couple nights ago it got windier than the dickens and now my beautiful Goliath corn is horizontal. Makes me sick but there's still more there than any field I've had in years. It can live like that a few more weeks and the chopper should pick the majority up. Luckily that field is fenced in and when the chopping is done there'll be a bunch of cows in there to finish up the job. The rest of the fields took it OK though. The Goliath is just a tad bit top heavy. So mark that corn off my list for future planting.
Cut hay yesterday and maybe all day today again. Last evening there arrived about my favorite kind of farm equipment on this old place. An ancient New Idea two row corn picker. Now I'm with the times let me tell you :) I love picking corn and now we finally got us a picker, used to rent the neighbor's all the time.So if I cut hay today I plan on starting oats swathing tomorrow and the next day. Busy, busy!
This is my slow time as far as studies go. We stay outside till almost dark and that don't leave much time to get my nose in the books. But that's coming again sooner than I know. Back to children's church tonight, and it'll be good to be back with the rascals! Plus in all of this I gotta fill out paperwork so I can preach. That should be interesting, gotta get myself a passport sized photo and fill out a zillion pages of forms. Maybe I'll be rejected like old Sheffey, but don't matter none. One thing got me stumped, that's making a resume, hmm, let's see. Experienced with a pitchfork, can pick rocks, can mend fence, can raise and butcher chickens, .........
