The Rural Way

I heard today that the little town that we go to church in has some videos of some of the events. So this evening I googled it up and low and behold they sure do! And I even found on where I’m in it. Of coarse I’m in the far backround and am on the far left standing on the street side holding a bag for a young girl that’s collecting parade candy. And more surprising is that there’s a whole bunch more videos in the category from the different things that go on around there, including last years Memorial Day observance at the community grave yard.

  1. Morning Morning,

Yep, those are two great books.

Hmmm Tom… looking at that video I saw a guy that looked like you pushing away a small kid and grabbing candy off the street…… :) .

We’ve only got one parade around here and thats the Christmas parade. We try to get around the decorated courthouse square. It sure is a site. I’ve been known to “help” kids with their candy too :) .

Well for the first time in a lot of years, I’m goatless. Don’t know what I’m going to be doing with all my spare time now. Our cobbler’s probably going to go out of business too. All the miles I put on them boots rounding up them jailbirds. Neighbor told me he didn’t think he could make it through the corn harvest without them goats to help. Oh well, took the last load in yesterday. The low price would of hurt my feelings… if I had any towards them critters.

I started back up on those bible studies. Good stuff there. I’m trying to get in 4 a week. Pretty tough once hay gets going again. I sure do learn alot….. except all those durn names….. plus when you add in all the CP names…… Question. On whose rock will Jesus build the church Answer : Rock . Instructors question Brad?? whose Rock??? :) . See when I don’t understand KJV I go to NIV when I don’t understand NIV, I go to CP. I guess if I don’t understand any of em, I go to he…. :) .

Well, better git going before I break a smily face record or something..

    Have a GREAT day,

    Brad

  2. Morning Brad!
I know, I know. What can I say, once the candy bag reaches a certain limit something comes over me and I claim it as my own :) Life is rough when you get caught on Candid Camera! Speaking of getting caught on camera making a total fool out of myself, now they posted pictures of me getting my mustache painted by the Children’s Church kids. Blood thirsty little rascals :) I had a bet with them, (No I don’t teach em gambling, well not to much anyhow), that if we hit 15 kids or more in attendance that they could paint my upper lip. About a month ago all of a sudden the room was getting pretty full and they broke the barrier and they sure remembered the six month old bet. Those pictures are at our church web site, on the sidebar, then click super church.

Got rid of them goats eh! You’ll live. Every once in a while the tempter speaks to me, “get some goats”, but in a day or two I rebuke that snake and then life is good again for a few months. When I’m really tempted I just get some hogs instead :) Cause hogs is a hillbillies best friend! Never no trouble with them things and they sure do taste good!

Hey, I mention the CP Gospels the other night preaching. I said, you all heard of the King James, the NIV, the Living Bible and so on. Well, we read the hillbilly translation!! Funny, no one ever heard of it, oh well, maybe it’ll catch on :) I’m pretty slow at those Bible studies now too. I have a few done, maybe I should submit a couple so they know I’m out here yet. Its hard to keep on going in summer with that. But every night I still do the daily Bible readings. I stand amazed, I ain’t behind. I don’t think I’ll ever quit that, just roll right over into next year when the time comes to start over. I use the Living Bible for the Old Testament, and boy does that ever help!!

Well, maybe cut some second crop hay today, who knows, but the day will be full one way or another!

    God Bless!

  3. Morning Morning,

Well Tom, I went over and looked at them pictures. Its true what they say huh?? Real men do wear pink :)

I found out the way to roof a house. Let someone else do it….. Got a new roof on the ol farmhouse. Now I don’t have any excuses for not getting busy and finishing up the inside of the thing. You know, I’ve roofed 4 houses over the years, but for what those pro’s do it for, its not worth the pinched thumbs and the dehydration. Plus those guys can do in a day what it would take me a couple of weeks to do. Anyway, another thing off the list.

While were on the subject of weatherproofing. I decided that this ol blog is a whole lot better than hanging a dead snake over barb wire. Everytime I whine about the lack of rain on here a pop up shower comes around. Well, someone must be real tired of hearing me complain because we’ve had them showers three out of the last five days. I finally see a tinge of green in those burnt up pastures.Still not soft enough ground to finish the cross fencing yet though. That ol PTO powered post hole digger won’t make a dent in this Alabama clay in the summer.

Well better git on. I guess I’m figuring on building some bleachers out there to watch the fescue green up. There’s no grass for hay, no fencing I can do, no goats to chase and repair fence for, and all the animals seem happy. This has been the laziest summer I’ve had in years.

But, no worries like last year. I’ve got enough hay in the barn for all the animals I got. Who knows, If I get a second cutting, I might just have to go on a spending spree at the sale barn.

    Have a GREAT day,

    Brad

  4. Morning Brad!
Things are going around here. A couple nights ago it got windier than the dickens and now my beautiful Goliath corn is horizontal. Makes me sick but there’s still more there than any field I’ve had in years. It can live like that a few more weeks and the chopper should pick the majority up. Luckily that field is fenced in and when the chopping is done there’ll be a bunch of cows in there to finish up the job. The rest of the fields took it OK though. The Goliath is just a tad bit top heavy. So mark that corn off my list for future planting.
Cut hay yesterday and maybe all day today again. Last evening there arrived about my favorite kind of farm equipment on this old place. An ancient New Idea two row corn picker. Now I’m with the times let me tell you :) I love picking corn and now we finally got us a picker, used to rent the neighbor’s all the time.So if I cut hay today I plan on starting oats swathing tomorrow and the next day. Busy, busy!
This is my slow time as far as studies go. We stay outside till almost dark and that don’t leave much time to get my nose in the books. But that’s coming again sooner than I know. Back to children’s church tonight, and it’ll be good to be back with the rascals! Plus in all of this I gotta fill out paperwork so I can preach. That should be interesting, gotta get myself a passport sized photo and fill out a zillion pages of forms. Maybe I’ll be rejected like old Sheffey, but don’t matter none. One thing got me stumped, that’s making a resume, hmm, let’s see. Experienced with a pitchfork, can pick rocks, can mend fence, can raise and butcher chickens, ………

    God Bless!

  5. Hey Tom, nice moustache, great colors! That’s what you get for gambling though! Glad your corn is doing well, ours is a wreck, the cold and wet brought an unbeatable crop of mustard in the corn, will wait and decide if anything will be salvagable. The continuing rain here means we have the cleanest hay I can remember, haven’t baled a bit that hasn’t been rained on after we cut! Todays my birthday (52) got to celebrate by signing the papers that sends 2/3 of the herd to auction next week, FSA said if we didn’t they would start foreclosure. 120 years we been here, so we will try to hang on for a while yet. Careful with that old cornpicker, lots of guys have lost a hand in them dang things, I ALWAYS shut off the PTO before I get off the tractor and get anywhere near mine! Hope you had a nice night at church, you are a blessed man.

PS How about that tape of your sermon?

  6. Morning Guys,

Hmmm…. wonder what ol Sheffey would say about signing all them papers. After you get em filled out alls you’ll need is the sheep wool and the coat and tails. You’ll be ready to go.

You know, down here that first year, I had the same problem with the reids yellow dent. All that lodging can sure depress a fellow. I ended up going through and using the corn knife to feed some really happy (and fenced in at the time…) goats. These new (old) op types I’m trying this year have a shorter stalk. We’ll see how they do. Gotta get that ol corn a cookin next year, and hope some coat and tie wearin, passport photo carryin, preacher don’t come through and mistake my fuel source for corn likker :) .

Ohhh hoe!!!! A new toy!! I’ll tell you, I’ve got an ol No. 10 one row. If you need any pattern dimensions for the ol wood or part numbers and all, I’ve got the book or the pieces I can measure on that ol thing. I can even almost time the thing too. Of course I notice you “industrialized” farmers have to go out and get them new fangled high capacity machines…… I mean…. dou you really need a two row??? :) .

Tom, that Sheffey book has made it off the nightstand and should be coming back your way pretty soon. Like I said before, don’t worry about sending the CP book back. Keep it, or send it on to someone else. I’ll tell you, your 2 for 2 on book recomendations. Or your 1 for 1 and Jan is too…..

Well better git on. You know, your resume might make you more qualified than you think. I know a bunch of guys that shovel manure that have never been on the farm…………

Hang in there Brent….. better days are comin’

    Have a GREAT day,

    Brad

  7. Morning Fellers!
Just call the mustache thing a service for the Lord :) What can I say! The kids got a down right thrill out of the revenge they got on old Tom though! And Brent, your just a youngster, well at least by seven months to me, and I’m wishing you a happy and blessed belated birthday this morning! And like Brad said, better days are coming! And I believe that!

I’m glad you enjoyed the Sheffey book Brad! We sure do gotta thank Jan for that! Speaking of Jan, is she missing in action?? She’s not been around the web layely and I, and I’m sure others, sure do miss her!

Yup, paper work and old Tom don’t mix very well. Just as soon do it like old Sheffey did. And he sure didn’t think all that greatly of the “higher ups” at the time. I like the front line work, I’m not a behind the battle paper chaser. We’ll see how it all develops. Knowing me it might take a few years just to fill out some papers. Most of the time papers get filled out because if they ain’t I’d go to jail. And even then they’re almost always late :)

Well, I was gonna swath some oats, probably still will later, but looks like rain arriving here shortly. Have to see how that plays out. Had our best rains this year when they said there was very little chance. Same as today.

Brent, all I can say is let me recover and I’ll see what I can do about getting you a CD someday of the service. Rumor has it that they’re a hot item, but I don’t know. Can’t see how, must be speculation value, folks figure they might be worth something someday :)

Well, I gotta get myself going, tis the season you know!

    God Bless!

  8. Morning Tom,

Well, we’ve been getting pretty lucky on these pop up showers lately. They’ve been hitting home pretty regular. The ol hand dug well is flowing again and I can stop having to bring out water to the farm. I’ll tell you, days and days of mid 90’s heat will cause you to miss that ol cold well water. By 10 am the jug waters about as warm as the air.

Gardens still going strong. My wife made some “Aunt Bea” pickles the other day. I love bread and butter pickles, but something went terribly wrong here. I feel like ol Barney and Andy trying to eat these things. Only 11 more jars to go…….. I’m just glad she didn’t enter them in the county fair :) . She also made some refridgerator pickles that are out of this world.

Every night we’ve got that ol pressure cooker going now (Well, she’s got it going….. I just offer that helpful manly advice…. even if she don’t need it…. :) ). The pantry is filling up and my wifes complaining about running out of jars. Life is good here.

That ol picker you got’s peaked my interest. Is it a pull behind or mounted? I dunno how you made it to church with that thing just arriving…. I’m like a kid in the candy store anytime some ol raggely piece of equipment rolls onto the farm. Them ol pickers have enough chains and rollers and gears to make them not that ol penny candy either. Did you end up with one of them 300 series or do you have an older one. I hear them newer ones the husking rollers are easier to changeout. Mine had me speaking in tongues……(Cattlemans tongues that is…..)

Well, fixing to start another weekend of fix it stuff. Our raggely ol rototiller bit the dust again and the possibilities of his and her hoes has got me scramblin to fix it. There’s a tractor show this weekend too I might head to. I always like to look at tractors that are just like mine……. except running…….. :) . Maybe I’ll pick up a tip on getting the sputtering out of that ol 1010.

Anyway I hope your weekend is good.

    Have a GREAT day,

    Brad

  9. Morning Brad!
Well, with a little luck I can finish the oats swathing today, (plus bale some more hay), and get ready for combining next week. I sure would be one happy guy if that gets all wrapped up by the end of next week!

That picker is one of them newer ones, a super picker, and I’ve run that model for years, borrowed from the neighbor, and I just love it! A pull behind, easy to hitch up and go. Them things can really pick corn, they get down to business. I forget the model number, never was much good at that. Makes me kinda a poor farmer, never remembering model numbers and such, but I get by.

The garden is starting to make more and more of an appearance in our house. This is that good time of year that a person could never equal with the store bought veggies. And when this here small grains is done with I want to pickle up some string beans! Ain’t hardly nothing better on this earth! I love it in the dead of winter when I come in from a few hours of morning chores and open the fridge and get out three or four pickled string beans and sit my butt in front of the computer to tend the blogs, just munching away at them beans, GLORY, that can get me going just thinking about such things! (Notice, I’m pretty easy to excite :) )
So now I’ll see what can be accomplished the next two days and look forward to Sunday service at church to wrap it all up, or should I say to start the new week!

    God Bless!

  10. Tom, We’ll be in your area on Sat around 1030am. Are you going to be around at all. I know this is short notice. Just let us know. I’ll look at my emails in the morning. Josh

  11. Morning,

Well looks like another hot and muggy one out there today. I’ve got a million things to do and about 4 hours to do em. ahhhh well, such is summer in Alabama.

Well, looks like the rototiller finally gave up the ghost. 40 years it did pretty good, finally this tough ol Alabama red clay exacted its toll. The gear that drives the blade is as smooth as can be over about 1/2 of it. The good news, is the motor is still good, so I can replace that ol hay elevator motor thats giving me fits.

Well, better git on. Its bill payin time this morning, that ought put me in a good mood for the rest of the day…..

    Have a GREAT day,

    Brad

  12. Morning!

I’ll be around Josh, working on the farm but no field work that I can see. Just swing on by and I should be around somewhere!

Brad, it ain’t as hot as down your way here, but it wears me out just the same. Got done swathing yesterday, ah, the power of prayer because when you swath with our neighbor’s swather that’s thee only thing keeping it going :) One rule on that thing, never look closely at the machine or you’ll be fixing all day. Just look straight ahead with determination, never lower your eyes to the machine……and pray, allot :) Now its the neighbor’s turn to swath his….rule number two, never watch the neighbor swath or you’ll be at the neighbor’s farm all day repairing the swather. Rule number three, if the neighbor is swathing that day and you see him driving up your driveway with his pickup….hide, fast!

My condolences to your rototiller. Must been close to it, eh!

Well, gotta get a bunch of stuff out of the way today so I’m ready for combining Monday, take care down there!

    God Bless!

  13. oh Durn it,

I forgot to tell ya. Jans computer went the way of my rototiller (insert dirge music here). Mine’s gettin pret near 10 years old…… could go anytime too (of course right now I’m lookin straight ahead at the screen with determination…. :) )
