The Old Methodist Piano

Well Glory! Got the first corn planted today and some sweet corn to boot! Weather permitting I’ll head out to another field and start getting it ready for corn tomorrow. Was in church last night, didn’t think I’d make it, but I just had to go! If I don’t get my “fix” of preaching and teaching I go half nuts! I don’t care if its two people or a large group, makes no difference, just gotta do it. Things went well, and I feel more work got accomplished around here just because a person has a little more zip in the step because of church.  And things are a buzzing around this house, moving things around, rearranging things because I found out last night after church we’re the proud owners of an ancient church piano! Gotta bring it home from church tomorrow evening and at least get it in the garage here, and if there’s enough strong backs around here, maybe upstairs where it will set. Its really old and really beautiful! I just wonder how many folks were saved as that old piano was playing years and years ago when our church building was a Methodist Church. You can’t buy a piano like that one! Now when we get it home I can take out the old hymnal from our church and practice up a bit. Plus on a couple of internet sites they have all the simple arrangements of many of the old hymns from days gone by that a person can print off for nothing, all public domain songs now.

I woke up this morning still in unbelief that we finally got us a piano, and more unbelief knowing the rich history of this particular one. Between reading the book Jan sent this way and receiving a Geneva Bible from our pastor a few weeks ago, and now this, I’m kinda wondering. Wondering because God knows my sincere interests, I figure He should because He must of put them in my heart and to see things like this happen have me more than amazed. Now I know to a regular person this might sound kinda stupid for lack of a better word, but I just love it! The piano is going upstairs, (someday when there’s enough help around the place), and the TV is coming downstairs. Even though it only gets like three channels nowadays its being more or less abandoned for good. The living room will be more like an old fashioned parlor. Nothing electronic there anymore except lights. No more entertainment center supposedly entertaining a person. Nope, more like real living, which might seem kinda strange to most folks in this day and age of everyone racing to buy the most modern electronic gadget for their homes.

Plus its garage sale season around here and my wife has discovered that you can but quite a few Bibles for pennies and that’s what she’s doing. She just got in with another one, I don’t know how many that makes now, and it looks like a good one. By that I mean its in good shape, well most of them are because lets face it, they were hardly ever touched. But they’ll be touched here plus it don’t hurt to have a whole bunch around to give to people when the need arises. And one thing for sure, the need will arise. So now we’re armed with allot of Bibles around this house, and a piano to boot! So that’s just a little news from around here, nothing earth shattering, but I’m having the time of my life!

  1. Morning Fellers and Ladies,

I was thinking about that old piano yesterday. Sounds like you do about what I do. Think about what them old things have been thru. It would be interesting to know now wouldn’t it?

That Garage sale season isn’t as big here as up north. I do remember that bibles were plentiful. She wouldn’t want any of mine though all wore out and ratty. Now I’d like to take credit for reading the spots off of it, but I can’t. I always have one in my truck and it ends up getting buried under tools and things. I think its lost so I put another one from my bedside in the truck. Eventually the old one shows up at the top of my tool pile and goes next to the bed. Its a never ending cycle. I do have one thats pretty new. A King James I’m gonna use for them lessons one of these days….

Well dang it, I can’t seem to keep them old tractors running for nuthin’!! Spent till dark working on a starter problem. Got it fixed, and the thing was running fine. then the spark just up and left. I don’t guess that 50 y/o wiring would have anything to do with it eh? So I’ll look at it a little this morning, Then its time to pull out big mama put it on my small sickle and start cutting. I never was known as a trendy guy around here… This combo ought to confirm it…

Lately these two old tractors have been giving my new “No cattleman’s tongues” rules a brutal workout.

Well, better see if I can get out there and save and feed the world….. (or maybe just my raggely ol cows).

    Have a GREAT day,

    Brad

  2. morning!
    a bit chilly here :?

well our garden is a washout !

hey NF, when ya start playing the pi~an~o be sure and tape it so Brad and I can here it! ;)

oh and Brad what do ya like to read? dh and myself love to read , we got some many books we could open our own bookstore.

well ya all take care , got to go to town today.

  3. Morning Folks!
Well, another day on the farm, running from pasture to pasture this morning and then if all is well head back to the fields and sit on my butt! Well, at least for one more day. Tomorrow, Lord willing, I’ll have us a small crew for picking rocks and that should be a good time. I’ll have to do that almost every Saturday I can, cause it sure does go better with a crew, plus a person can joke and stuff!
I don’t know about taping my playing on the old piano just yet :) Looks like it might be in my garage for some time to come until I can find enough people to get it up seven stairs to our living room. Basically I play Chinese piano, “chopsticks”, and a few other well selected tunes. But give me that old hymnal and I’m sure I could practice my way to something half way decent!
Sorry about the garden Jan, around here I’ve never been washed out, just baked out or froze out, but the end result is the same. At least I got enough sweet corn in yesterday to feed an army, (or our church folk), and will plant another batch in a couple weeks to extend the season a bit. I love sweet corn!
I hope to take today easy, just disk another twenty acres or so and then after supper head for the hills and load that old piano on a trailer and get it in our garage. I’ll take some photos of the thing someday, its a dandy!
Now to snap this old back in place and toodle on outside!

    God Bless!

  4. Morning Morning!!

I’ve about had it. I dunno what the boss is gonna think here in a bit. I think my eyes are closing as we speak. I have been a repairing fool (more fool than one might think). I’ve had two mowers go down. One permanently. That 70 y/o metal has started failing. I can’t believe it…. The other one breaks down every other lap. Heck, I don’t even put the tools away in the truck. I know something is gonna go wrong. So after 3 days of mowing, I’ve got 10 acres done. Were going to bale that tonight.

On top of all that, my raggely ol goats thought that a neighbors corn field was better grazing than my ol pastures. All this was taking place while I was mumblin and grumblin under the mower. The neighbor said he might have to shoot ‘em. I might not wait for him to do it :) . I did find a neatly hid hole last night and did some wire stitching. We’ll see if that holds.

I sure did pick the wrong week to give up the Cattleman’s tongues!!!!

Well Jan, I’m a nonfiction kind of guy. I’ve read one fiction book in the last five years and that was “The Time it Never Rained”. That ended up being more truth than alot of the of books that say they’re nonfiction. Right now, I’m reading one called “Home comfort” its about a hippie commune in the early 70’s. Old book, pretty interesting really.

I was going to ask Tom if I could steal that Circuit Rider book from him when he was finished. Sounds like something right up my alley. Especially after my mind might need some cleaning up after that free love mentality of that ol commune book. My wife and I have 8 bookshelves full of books. We love to read too.

Well, better git on. I’ve got to find some hardened pins for a pitman clamp. If I knew the engineer who designed that thing, I’d have to splain to him a thing or two about ease of use……..

    Have a GREAT day,

    Brad

  5. Morning Brad!
I know breakdowns, had the delight of replacing a bearing on the disk yesterday afternoon. Had more than one tear in the eyes from the severe pain that returned from so much heavy weight mangling my healed up back. But amazingly,( and I thank you Lord), the back feels good this morning!! Gotta replant 7 acres of hay this morning sometime, had a little winter kill that I discovered, no big deal. And then pop in forty acres of corn today and tomorrow and after that I’ll be over the hump with only some small patches left here and there.
It’ll take me a little bit yet on the book and then I’ll let you know and send it down there. This book is thee most amazing book I have ever read! Of course I’m a little strange according to most folk :) I figure I only need a Bible, (which we have a fairly good selection of in this house since garage sale season officially opened), and the circuit rider book and I’d be set for life! The day to day life of traveling everywhere in his region is really good! I really like when the preacher comes across this young bride, maybe 18 or so, that already has three kids and her husband is “hooked” on shine and beats the pulp out of her when he’s drunked up. That old boy comes home just blasted and passes out. The circuit rider tells the woman to fill a tub with whiskey and puts it out in the woods. They take the drunk, undress him buck naked, throw him in the whiskey tub. Surround it with dead brush and green evergreen boughs a little ways from it and set the brush on fire and them green evergreens really smoke, like burning a tire. Well, that drunked up good old boy wakes up, buck naked laying in whiskey and sees the fires of hell around him Pure, pure terror! He manages to get himself out of the whiskey and makes a run through the fire and literally becomes a ball of flame for a couple second till the whiskey burns itself off of him! Runs like a madman, hits a tree and knocks himself cold! The circuit rider and the young wife put the hell burnt man back to bed and the circuit rider, whom the drunk never even knew was visiting goes on with his travels. Now that’s what I call evangelism!! :) I’ll remember that for the future!
Ok, I’d better get out of here and get started for the day. Hopefully I won’t have to break my back fixing a disk today and all goes well!

    God Bless!

  6. Morning All,

That back still feeling pretty good Tom?? If not I got some ol pastures that ought to jerk them muscles back into place. Armidllo’s have moved in here the last few years and dig homes in the pastures. I hit one of em every once in a while and throw every good feeling joint I got into a state of panic. I guess I felt a few last night when I was raking.

Well, some hay is baled. Got to offload and bale some more tonight. Tonight should be the last night of working in the dark for a while. Next week will be cleaning up some fields and sitting around in the evenings and drinking lemonade….. (yeah … right….).

Great story about that circuit rider. Thats a book I think I’ll have to read. I saw the the title over on NF. I might put that on my fall/ winter reading list. I want to tackle the lessons too.

I might have to rely on you more for them things. They are having a tough go of it over there at the Pillar of Truth. I’m kind of wondering if there at a crossroads right now. I do like the eay them lessons are set up. Hopefully that ministry will keep going. It sure is a good one.

Well, better git a cup of coffee. I bought one of them three wheelers to ride the pastures with the other day, cept it was missing a wheel (so I can ride it to work all legal too). I sure am liking that 70mpg over the trucks 15, but with these 40 something degree mornings, my fingers can barely type.

    Have a GREAT day,

    Brad

  7. Morning Brad!
The old back is feeling pretty durn good! But there’s a story that goes with that and I’m gonna save it for a post someday when I get time. Its one of them healing waters stories :)
I know, what’s happening over at PTM has really got me dwelling. Talk about rough! I started the third series of lessons, but now instead of two lessons an evening I’m down to one lesson a week from severe lack of time. But like those folks of faith in the olden days that I sometimes mention I’ll pick up in those matters when the crops are in. My prayer is that the ministry can see its way through these tough times and come out stronger than ever. When Pastor Byron died just a week or two after the first pastor died I was almost in a state of shock. Never met none of them, but the help and encouragement they gave was tremendous when I first started out. And their web site is one of the few places on the internet where I truly feel at home. Plus their studies truly are not trying to teach folks some man made tradition. Its amazing how they can stick to the Word so well. That ministry is in my prayers more than all the rest combined this season.
Gotta get out and plant corn today and maybe tomorrow too. Things are moving so I ain’t complaining! Maybe in a couple weeks I’ll be cutting a little hay and be done with the dirt work. Kinda different with the cattle all on pasture, might have to buy a fishing license one of these days :)
Take care on that two wheeled three wheeler :) I should get on of them too! Was thinking about buying one of them Jap mini trucks, get about 60 or 70 miles to a gallon, are four wheel drive and could be used in all the field and pasture checks. Plus they have heated cabs. And a really good one around these parts goes for $6000 and down.
Well, I had better think about corn planting!

    God Bless!

  8. Morning Tom,

Man, it was hard to get up this morning. I’m still punchy here, but we got all the hay were going to on that field. Two more to go here and the first cutting will be done. Tonight its out to put back whats left of my sickle mower and see if I can get it going again.

I’ll tell you, I was reading over on NF where you were talking about all them locals with the new equipment. I was hearing your message, but deep inside I think I was secretly coveting :) . Oh well, some men have fantasies about other women, I just have them about equipment that will last a whole day in the field……

Actually, I almost got the OK from the boss to get one of those disc mowers. A neigbor got one last year and told me they were as slick as a whistle. So, I’m going out fixing the ol sickle again tonight. If it breaks, I’m off to the dealer and use some of this loggin money I was saving for retirement.

My 19 y/o told me one yesterday while we were throwing up in the loft (hay that is….). He kind of gave me his two week notice. He said he was getting outside enough with his football practice and his fishing, so he wanted someplace he could be indoors, so he picked up an application for Dollar General. I was trying to tell him that fishing didn’t count as outside work, but he wasn’t buying it.

Well better git on. Hey, did you get that piano in the house?? Hows your chopsticks coming?? I was thinking about that the other day. I can see all them fans a waving on a hot summer day while Ms so and so is banging out Amazing Grace (or chopsticks…) on that thing. Then its off to the Model T and home for a Sunday meal…… oops I was going to git on wasn’t I ?

    Have a GREAT day,

    Brad

  9. Morning Brad!
One more long day and I think we might just have the corn done here. Will try and finish the last big field this morning that I got over half done by last evening and then three small patches here and there. It dawned on me, I might have time to go fishing for once :) I’m really tired too this morning, took three tries with the alarm clock to finally get me up and about. Thank our Lord for snooze on them things! But after 10 months of solid disaster work here I can see the end in sight. Dustier than heck out in the fields but that’s to be expected, but we’re taking advantage of the good weather and getting it all wrapped up. There’ll be a very short gap between planting and hay making to catch up with everything else.
That old piano is still in the garage waiting to come upstairs. Gotta get me a crew of stout volunteers! Haven’t even had time for any chopsticks on that thing but one of these days!
I’d better get and do some pasture checks as the sun is coming up and then get to planting them fields!

    God Bless!

  10. Morning Tom,

That ol sickle made my day easy yesterday. Replaced all the broken parts, made sure everything was workin free and all. Told the Lord it was in his hands now and mowed about 10 feet before the drive shaft broke (again). Near as I can figure the thing is just wore out and the sickle bar is binding when it hits the thick grass. Anyway I moved the ol pile of junk along a fence row and looks like I’ll be heading out tomorrow to get a drum or disc mower.

Man I hate spending that kind of money. My stomachs all tore up as we speak. I’m trying to figure out if its my pride thats hurt, because I couldn’t fix that ol thing or I really am a tightwad. But, especially after the last two years, I can’t be lettin feed just sit in the field because I’m too cheap to do something right (see, I’m still trying to talk myself into it as we type…..).

Well, we had a little shower last night, but dry weather seems to be back here. Maybe I’m just paranoid and all. I get the feeling thought is drought might not be over. It just seems to be setting up that way. Now don’t get me wrong, we’ve had more rain than last year already, but heading still towards 7 inches below normal.

Man, this is sure a doom and gloom comment isn’t it? :) . Well, I guess we still got our health….. :) .

So, is the planting done?? Fishing around the corner?? Son went yesterday and said he had a 5 lb largemouth on, but couldn’t get it into the rowboat. Might be a little bit of a story, but he thinks it was just as big as the one I have on the wall (back when I fished and didn’t get all stressed out over little stuff….)

Well, I guess I’ve whined enough for one week. Tomorrow I’m on the road at 3am heading out to get a mower. I hope you and your family have a great Memorial day weekend. Your’s too Jan.

    Have a GREAT day,

    Brad

  11. Hi Guys,
hope ya all have a safe weekend, DH is home for 4 days
some we have been putting the graden back out,

a blogging friend losted his 18 year old son this week, so please keep them in prayer, thanks

    hows the back, NF,?

    take care Brad!

  12. Evening Folks,

Good Church day today. Interesting reading on humanism of all things. So, some ol farmer got thought of a little in the Catholic church. You seem to be a week or two ahead of the game Tom.

Well, I’m plum wore out. Darkness seems to come too early here. I’m glad I get a month or two rest anymore between cuttings. This haying gets rougher every year. Hopefully the rush will be over by tuesday night or wednesday.

I about passed out in the loft tonight. Never had that happen before. Guess there is something to be said for them younger folk. I gotta get it through my head I’m getting old.

Ooops, time for bed. Tonight it will probably take one sentence of reading before I see the back of my eyelids.

    Have a GREAT night,

    Brad

  13. Evening Jan and Brad!
I haven’t been around much on the computer so excuse me for being so late this long weekend. Hey, we got us a nice rain yesterday!! Praise the Lord! Around a half an inch, just about right for the conditions we have here. Everything is done planted and now a good starter rain to boot! I tell you, the grass really perked up around here!
I’ll keep your blogging friend in my prayers Jan.
All in all things are well here. There’s plenty to do, but just to see the crops sprouting and growing sure does lift my spirits! Church was great Sunday and today I really didn’t get the holiday I had thought I would, but that’s OK, got allot done around the place and hope to hit it hard tomorrow and get Wednesday evening church services back into the norm too! I’ll teach on the Book of Acts this next month I figure, continuing our journey through the New Testament. Let them kids act some of it out too, that’s always a winner!
See Brad, I’m plowing the path for you, staying ahead of your church by about two weeks. Making it easier, (or more confusing), and all you got to do is soak it all in :) I might take it a little easier for a while writing here and just kick back and relax like I used to sometimes. Got enough hillbilly in me to do that good! Ah, yes, get the garden planted and done this week, go teach children’s church Wednesday evening, and think and pray about what God has for me to do, because I’ll admit, I’m confused :)

    God Bless!
