The old ways, faith pure and simple! You know, there’s nothing quite like a little country church! My favorite services are evening services from fall through spring. Meaning it gets dark out, no distractions from the windows, can’t even see the trees outside. It seems like a person is in their own little world in the church building. Reminds me of what I was reading last winter in the evenings about the Old Holiness meetings when they came to town and country many years ago and would set up night meetings so folks could get to them after a hard days work on the farms, mines, sawmills, whatever. Oh, what those folks went through back then, they’d get their tents tore down, arrested, churches mysteriously burned, shunned. You get caught going to a Holiness Church and you were pretty well banned from whatever church you had been going to. But they sure weren’t stopped and they spread like wildfire!

Nowadays it’s tamed down somewhat, but not altogether. You still get odd looks from folks, but what the heck, I always got them anyhow! Besides if folks are giving me odd looks I figure they’re not getting in trouble with somebody else, kinda a public service. Now, I know some folks are against what I do and what I talk about, but I like reading the Bible and believing it’s the Word of God. I’ve heard that the Bible’s ok but church doctrine supersedes it. Well, I can’t stop anyone from believing what they want to believe but we’ll just stick with the Word. Answering to the Lord is a bit more important than some church elder that’s got a failing marriage, can’t keep their own house in order type deal.

We were listening to a sermon about fear today. But first let me tell about my morning before church. When I got up this morning I felt like what we haul out in the manure spreader from the barns every so often. Now, I don’t know what the heck that was, but it was bad. Headache and sore bones everywhere. And I ain’t even a Saturday night sinner no more so I was confused! This was bad. Out in the pasture a couple of miles away a pain came through my leg like somebody stabbed me with a knife in the lower leg. I had to stop right there, enough is enough! Now it’s Sunday morning, my favorite morning of the week, not because it’s a day off like for most folks, because it isn’t for me, but because that’s the morning to go to church after chores are all done. It didn’t take me all to long to figure out that this was an attack from the devil to ruin the Lord’s Day. Out in that far pasture I just stopped and had me a good talk with the Lord and then told that devil to get away from me, cause I was bought by the Blood. After that, it all went away, fast. I got home and put on some good old worship songs on the CD for good measure and made it to church in a borrowed truck, cause both of mine are broke down. No big deal, I mean the broke down trucks.

But the sermon today was on the same line as what I wrote about last night, although I was still in a bit of a daze from that devils attack on me a couple of hours earlier. Funny how sermons can be about the very thing going on in a person’s life at the moment. I know that attack was serious, cause every time a person moves farther along with the Lord, the attacks will come, whether through family, friends, work, whatever. They will come and we will overcome! Praise Jesus! But the evil one can’t stop us from getting to that Little Bible Believing Church in the Hills, even if I have to borrow a truck to get there! Sure does remind me of the Old Holiness Churches, when people went through so much to get to the meetings. So, Wednesday evening we go back for evening services, I can’t wait. Work like a bear until then, get cleaned up and head for the hills!

  1. I would feel right at home in that church. Mine is the same way, only more people.

  2. Morning Tom,
hope you have a great day!

  3. John,
That church on the old photo ain’t ours but I’d sure would have felt at home there too fifty years ago or so when that picture was taken. Our church really isn’t any bigger, there’s just something about them small country churches! God Bless!

    Jan,

  4. Good afternoon Tom. I got the Victory in Praise cd today from Tommy Bates. It rocks. The song call The Drinking Song just makes you want to dance. Give glory to God. This is the day that the Lord has made and I WILL REJOICE in it. Giving God all the Glory.

  5. Hey PJ!!
Long time, no detect on the computer, eh!
I got mine on right now, CD that is, got it today too!! Also got a load of stuff from World Harvest Bible College today. With the regular mail and the Tommy Bates package and all the other stuff that mailman unloaded from the front seat, the back seat, and the trunk. Good thing I was just passing by our place at the time :)
See you tomorrow night and think this thought in your head, “I’m going to learn how to catch cattle!” Repeat it several times during the day and in your sleep :) It really helps your thought process when I ask you a question tomorrow night. Or else it’s a warning to avoid me!

  6. I also enjoy Sunday night services. They are freer somehow for praise and worship. Love the photo…

  7. Kathleen Marie,
There’s just something about evening services that I really love! I remember last spring when we had healing services on Friday and Saturday nights, a little crowded rural church and three hours services and still I didn’t want to go home when it was all done.
Thanks so much for stopping by here, God Bless!

    Tom
